// scenario SC-001
Receiving Criticism
Feedback arrives before you are ready for it, and the system defends instead of listening.
// the situation
What happens
Someone points out a mistake in your work in front of other people. The tone is not cruel, but it is direct, and it lands while you are already busy.
Default reaction
Defend first. Explain why the mistake was reasonable. Decide the other person is being unfair.

Recognize → Pause → Process → Respond → Evolve
- 01
Recognize
Notice the heat: tight chest, faster speech, a sentence forming before they finish theirs.
- 02
Pause
Take one breath before answering. Nothing is lost in three seconds.
- 03
Process
Separate two questions: is the observation accurate, and was the delivery comfortable? They are not the same question.
- 04
Respond
"Say more about what you saw" keeps the exchange open. Agreement is optional; understanding is not.
- 05
Evolve
Note whether the correction turned out to be useful. Over time this rewrites how the next one feels.
// reflection
Questions to sit with
- When you were last corrected, did you argue with the point or with the delivery?
- What would change if you assumed the person wanted the work to succeed?
- Who gives you feedback you actually trust — and why them?
“Criticism is data arriving in an uncomfortable envelope.”
